With 60% of Americans overweight and 300,000 people dying a year form obesity diseases (such as heart disease , hyper-extension, kidney disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes), I would say American has a "big" problem.
Vegetarians are shown to have lower rates of obesity. Recent studies have also shown that vegetarian kids grow taller, have higher IQs, and have reduced rates of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Heart disease and cancer are some of the two most devastating diseases affecting families in the United States and worldwide. Eating a higher-than-average intake of vitamin packed veggies, fiber-rich greens and grains, and legumes help lower rates of cancer; eating plant-protein and high fiber and complex carbs mitigate the chances of contracting heart disease. Plant protein reduces cholesterol levels while animal protein raises them; therefore, "salad shooters" (my nickname for vegetarians) are 50% less likely to develop heart disease.
